My name is Travis Lucas and I am the son of Christopher Lucas and Denise Rial. I have two older sisters, Jessica, twenty-eight and Brittany, twenty and one younger brother, Joshua, nine. I am eighteen years old and currently a senior at Hanover-Horton High School. When I leave Hanover-Horton, I will continue my education at Kalamazoo Valley Community College for one year and transfer to Adrian College where I plan to study Physical Therapy.
I grew up in a family where we don’t have many things. My parents split up when I was eight years old. My sisters moved out when they were both nineteen so that left me the man of the house. Most teenagers these days don’t have the responsibilities I do. Being the oldest guy in the house I have to watch my little brother and take care of him when my mom is at work such as taking him to practice, making sure he eats and showers. It may not seem like a lot, but it is when I have school and sports to focus on as well. It has made me the good person that I believe I am today. My mom was laid off from Baker College last year which left us in a scare. My mom then got a job at Buddy’s gas station in North Adams which is better than nothing.
Even though I have been through a lot these past ten years I have been able to keep a positive attitude and still enjoy the free time I have. I have always been that funny kid who always tries to make people happy and laugh. Many of my friends ask me how I do all the things I do and not get mad. It takes a lot for me to get mad or upset which may or may not be the reason why I can handle all the stress I have with my family. I am okay with it though and it only makes me stronger. Being the type of person that has always done things for myself, I sometimes find it difficult to ask for help even when its sometimes needed.
Through the Myers-Briggs personality test, I learned my type is ENTJ, which stands for Extravert, Intuition, Thinker, and Judging. This suggests I am a person who enjoys being with people and energetic when it comes to being out and about, which I do. In addition, the “N” says I am creative, imaginative person who looks forward to the future, which is a perfect example of me. The “T” is for Thinking and I learned it means I am a critical thinker who enjoys debating, which is the truth. The final part of the type indicator is “J” for Judging, which says I am an organized who prefers to plan things before going about.
My interests include sports, family, and friends. Sports are major thing in my life. Without sports I would be a big ball of stress because they are my getaway. Sports keep me focused and take me away from the outside world or reality. My family means the world to me. They are the ones that hold be together and keep me going. Without my family I wouldn’t know what to do with myself because they have always been there for me through thick and thin. At last my friends. Friends are who make you who you are as a person. They are the ones that try to give you good advice and nine times out of ten they are usually wrong, but it’s the thought that counts. Friends are usually the first people you go to because you know they will try to make you feel better no matter what the cost.
With everything that has gone on in my life, good or bad, my drive to succeed will never change. Dad has always told me that I am the hardest working kid he’s ever laid eyes on and to never quit. That has taught me to be who I am and never change to what someone else wants me to.

Exhibit: Big Brother
Benchmark: Individuality
Skill: Role Model
For six years my mom has been a single mother and that has been challenging throughout my high school career. I have always been an athlete throughout middle school and high school years and being a big brother with big responsibilities has always been a struggle, but family and priorities always come first.
I chose being a big brother because it shows how well you can be a role model and how you manage your time. My little brother, Joshua, is 9 years old. He always wants to go to my games and practices so he is with me most of the time. When he goes to my extracurricular activities I have to show him how to be a good teammate and control your emotions when you’re having a bad day. Most people don’t want to watch their siblings, but I don’t mind it. Josh and I have a bond that many siblings do not have. We have the same interests and he’s a quick learner when it comes to hard situations. People always ask me how I am able to keep up with sports and home priorities, but I really don’t have an answer to that. I guess I’m just used to it because I’ve been there for him and my mom for the majority of my life.
When I become a physical therapist I will need to show my co-workers that they can depend on me and know that I will help them out to my best ability. As a young adult when I go to college I will need to take responsibility for my school work, getting to class on time, and be prepared for the challenges that I may face as a student.

Exhibit: Soccer
Benchmark: Individuality
Skill: Quick Learner
During my senior year of high school I participated in Varsity Soccer. I played soccer for one year in the 3rd grade and I decided to try it again. At first soccer was pretty difficult for me. My teammates had a lot more experience than I did, but they encouraged me to do my best and that helped me out a lot throughout the season.
I chose soccer as my exhibit because it is one of my proudest moments of my senior year. Throughout the season I was getting better and better every practice and game. At the end of the season got the All Conference Award and the Dream Team Award. Those two awards showed me that I am a quick learner because I started off the season as a substitute player and then I became a starter and eventually became an All Conference player.
When I become a physical therapist I plan to get through college and then starting my career right away. In order for me to do that I will need to learn quickly and stay focused to accomplish my goals. As a young adult I will face many challenges in life and I will need to learn from my mistakes so I can improve on being a better person.

Exhibit: Sports Training binder
Benchmark: Individuality
Skill: Organized
As a junior I took sports training. In sports training we were required to do a lot of things like take quizzes or wrap someone’s ankle using proper athletic training techniques. Included in this was a binder that had to be organized with dividers and even page numbers.
Doing this binder was quite difficult in my opinion. Before this class I generally wasn’t very organized, but by the time this class ended I felt quite educated on being organized. During this class my teacher was very specific on the way he wanted the binder to be done and if we didn’t do it that way we wouldn’t pass the binder check. At first, I was skeptical about this because I didn’t like being organized but after going through the experience I realize how important it is to be organized, and I think this class has prepared me very well for life as an adult.
As a young adult I will need to be organized in almost everything I do. Like doing taxes, if I keep everything organized it will make doing taxes a lot easier than it could be. Also, being a physical therapist will require a lot of organization so I can keep my patient’s information organized and I don’t get confused.

Exhibit: Sports Training Presentation
Benchmark: Individuality
Skill: Presentation Professional
As a high school student I have had many presentations in my day. There are a lot of ways to present information to a group of people, but I have always found that a PowerPoint is the most efficient way to do this.
One of the many PowerPoints that I have used was in Sports Training during my junior year. I was asked to create a presentation on all the minerals of the body and how they benefit or harm our bodies. I had to do all the research and transfer that research into a PowerPoint to present in front of the class. I ended up getting a good grade on it because I presented my information in such an efficient manner. This was one of the many presentations that made me into a great presenter today.
As a young adult I will need to be able to present information well during college a lot, doing a college research project or a book report possibly. I may also need to be able to present if I do research independently and I need to present in front of a board or a group for review. As a physical therapist I will need to be able to present well during conferences or any type of meeting if I have any information I need to let my colleagues see.

Skill: Dedication
Throughout my high school career I have always been an athlete. I have participated in wrestling, baseball, soccer, and football. Being a dedicated athlete is easy for me because it’s what I love doing and my parents have always pushed me to be a better person. Dedication shows how one person can have the most heart and drive for something they may or may not like doing.
I chose sports because they are a perfect example of someone who shows interest for something they do on a daily basis. Being an athlete is a major reason for who I am today. Dedication is what many people look for whether it’s sports, a job, or even just as a friend. I have gained the ability to be dedicated because of my parents. They are always telling me to do what’s right and pushing me to do my very best with everything I do.
As a future physical therapist I will need to show drive and dedication to get right results and helping my patients get healthy in the fastest way possible. As a young adult I will need to show dedication because that’s what many colleges and jobs look for in an individual.

Skill: Professionalism
Throughout my high school career I have participated in many sports. On game days for wrestling we had to dress up to look professional and sophisticated. As an athlete it is huge to represent your school in the best way possible, so we dressed up to help show how great our school really is.
I chose professional attire because it is a great example for showing that I am respectful and mature. Being an athlete is a big deal for me and my family. They have always pushed me to do my very best and I believe that it has made me the mature young man I am today.
When I become a physical therapist I will need to dress appropriately and professionally to show my respect to my job. As a young adult I will need to show my maturity and dressing professionally will help represent myself.
