Exhibit: Good attendance for extracurricular activities
Benchmark: Personal management
Skills: P101- Have good attendance at work, and/or extracurricular activities
Being a 3 sport athlete is tough at times. We have to show up every day ready to work. I wrestle, play baseball, and soccer. Every year I show up to play the sports I love and I cherish every minute of them. Although, working around my sports and home life schedules can be difficult I still manage to show up every day.
Showing up to practices is a huge deal to coaches. If you show up every day to practice the coach sees your commitment and will give you more opportunities to play. Out of my whole high school career I have only missed a total of 4 practices out of all three sports. I have a nine-year-old brother that I have to babysit every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday so making practices has been a big challenge, but I was able to make almost every one of them. I take full advantage of the sports I play because they will be all done after high school.
When I become a physical therapist I will need to show up every day ready to work and finish the things that need to be done. Also, I will most likely have appointments with patients almost every day so I will need to show up to help them as well. Attendance is pretty important in college as well because I will need to get my hands-on training so I can get a good example of what I will be doing for my career. When I become a dad I will want them to show up every day to school, sports, or any other extracurricular activities and try their hardest.

Exhibit: Drivers Training
Benchmark: Personal Management
Skills: P102: Demonstrate safety and self-control requiring minimum direction and supervision
When I was 15 years old I was able to take drivers training segment one. Segment one consists of sitting in a classroom for two hours listening to an instructor tell us how to operate a vehicle properly. We had to do this for three months and at the end of the three months we took a test that was 100
questions long . Being in drivers training made me feel like I was a big kid and I’ll finally get the
chance to be an adult.
Since I was only 15 years old and taking on a big responsibility I was kind of nervous. When I drove for the first time with my instructor I got all nervous, but I knew what rules I had to follow in order to show the teacher I was capable of keeping people safe while operating a vehicle. When I was finished with the driving tests and the written test I felt like I was capable enough to take on more responsibilities so I could have less supervision.
When I become a physical therapist I will have to take on my own responsibilities because I won’t have anyone by my side giving me instructions on how to do my work. As a young adult learning how to do things on my own and showing people that I was capable of taking on a big responsibility, I believe that I can take on any problems I face in the future. If I was able to control my nerves and have someone give me directions as little as possible; I think as a young adult that I can do things better in the future.

Exhibit: College Applications
Benchmark: Personal Management
Skills: P103: Meet school and/or work deadlines
College applications are a step to further your education which I plan to do. Getting into a college isn’t like getting into a public school. You have to fill out applications and even pay money for them even if they don’t accept you. Filling out applications can be stressful and nerve wracking because you want to get accepted, but you don’t know for at least two weeks.
Applications are a very important aspect to getting into a college. When you send an application to a college they sometimes ask you to get a letter of recommendation so you have to find an adult that will write one for you. The colleges I applied to didn’t ask for a letter of recommendation they needed the application. I applied to Adrian College, Jackson College, and Kalamazoo Valley Community College.
Since I want to be a physical therapist I will definitely need to further my education which is why I filled out applications before their deadlines. As a young adult I will need to turn in things that have deadlines as well. Being a physical therapist I will need to meet deadlines by writing up procedures, making sure the patients are up to their full potential, and giving the patients a diagnosis. Whether that is at work; taking my family to the doctor; or other important things.

Exhibit: Save up for a truck
Benchmark: Personal Management
Skills: P104: Find new and creative ways to solve problems
Taking on challenges or problems is sometimes hard, but once you find a way to solve them all you need to do is continue to go the route you chose. With that being said, I am currently trying to save up for a truck. Saving is a hard thing to do especially if you don’t work all that much. Since I am a student and working I usually only work weekends so my paycheck is not very much, but I make it work as well as I can.
Being a student and working is difficult at times, but I came up with a solution. Since I don’t work that often during the week I take as many hours as I can on the weekends so I can try to make up for those lost hours during the week. Now, when I get my check I immediately take it to my bank and deposit most of the check into my savings account. This plan is working well and I continue to do it after I get my truck as well.
Since I am going to be a physical therapist I will need this type of attitude to become a successful therapist. I will have to come up with creative ways to help my patients to make their recoveries more enjoyable. As a young adult I will need to put money away for emergencies and for my children to go to college. Putting money away is a smart thing to do as a teenager because I now understand how to manage money and that gives me more experience for the future.: Find new and creative way to solve problems

Exhibit: Personal Workout/Planner
Benchmark: Personal Management
Skills: P105: Use timelines, document steps you take, and evaluate your results in a problem solving process.
P106: Use charts, graphs, or graphic organizers to demonstrate organizational skills.
During my high school career all students have the opportunity to take a class called personal fitness. In this class we are able to work out and keep our bodies active. Being in this class was great for athletes to get in shape for their upcoming seasons and for non-athletes they are able to get into shape or stay in shape. Personal fitness is a class where you show up, work hard, and get graded on participation.
When I was in this class my sophomore year we had to construct a workout plan based on our availability for sports and what not. We had to make a graph, a chart full of workouts, and reasons as to why we are doing these exercises and how they will improve our skills as an athlete. For me, I am an athlete so I had to make a work outs that would enhance my strength, endurance, and agility. Surprisingly enough my work out plan worked and help me through my sophomore year of sports.
When I become a physical therapist I will need to know how to construct and read graphs, charts, and to improve my organizational skills. Planning my work out for my personal fitness class has taught me how to construct a well-organized graph and to be thorough with my reasons behind the plan. As a young adult I will become more organized because it would be a part of my college life. Taking little steps to show results is the best way to go and I plan to do so in the near future.

Exhibit: Volunteering for blood drive
Benchmark: Personal Management
Skills: P107: Be self motivated in taking responsibility
P109: Recognize a need or opportunity and take appropriate action
Every year my school, Hanover-Horton, has Red Cross come in and we host three blood drives per year in our library. I have participated in every one of them for the past four years. Being a part of the blood drive is a great thing because it’s good to help others. Giving blood gives me a comfort because I know I made a difference and saved lives.
When we give blood we must make sure our iron is at the right amount and we have to drink a lot of water beforehand. If you don’t do those things you will most likely pass out or feel nauseous so I make sure I am fully hydrated and I eat well the night before. After you give blood you have to eat and drink sweet stuff so you can get your blood sugar back up to normal. Also, every year I bring in food and drinks for the patients to eat and drink after they give blood.
In the future when I become a physical therapist I will need to take responsibility for everything I do whether it’s work, helping others, or just as simple as being to work on time. If a co-worker needs help giving a patient a diagnosis I should be able to help him/her out with their problems. As a young adult it is really good to take responsibility for things when you’re young because it will benefit you later in life. When I have kids I will want them to take responsibility of their actions and with other things like school and sports. Being self motivated and taking responsibility are huge aspects of life.

Exhibit: JV to Varsity sports
Benchmark: Personal Management
Skills: P108: Go beyond what is asked to improve personal, educational, or work-
related projects
P110: Accept new and changing responsibilities
Every year I have been a part of the baseball team at Hanover-Horton High School. Baseball has always been my favorite sport so every day I strive to do the best I can to become a better player. We, as a team, have come a long way in the past four years and I am proud to say that I’m part of this program.
Baseball has always been my favorite high school sport. When I was a freshman I was kind of scared that I wouldn’t make the JV baseball team, but I worked hard and I made it. My sophomore year I was on JV for a few games until I got moved up to Varsity about halfway through the season. Moving from JV to Varsity is a huge change. The pace of the game is faster and the competition is a lot harder. Going from 65 mph fastballs to 75-80 mph fastballs was a big change and that took some time to get adjusted to as well. The following year I became the starting second baseman and I worked harder than ever to get to that starting position.
As I move forward into the medical field I will have to accept change in my responsibilities. I will have to start out as an assistant before I become a physical therapist which causes changes to be made. Being a physical therapist I will have to do the best work I can and go beyond my tasks to be successful. As a young adult I will accept change in life to be happy and when those challenges to come up I will go beyond others to improve things important things in my life.
